Data center legislation advances in Nashville
The Nashville City Council advanced three bills concerning data center development after a lengthy meeting. One bill proposes permanent regulations on data center size and proximity to residential areas and schools, effectively banning large campuses. Another enacts a temporary moratorium on all new data center proposals until November 1st to allow time for further regulation development. Additionally, a new bill from the mayor seeks to acquire land near the zoo, which was previously sought by DC BLOX for a data center.
The Nashville City Council concluded a lengthy meeting around 2:00 AM, advancing three significant bills related to data center development in Davidson County. These legislative actions are poised to shape the future of data centers in the area.
The most impactful bill, which requires one more vote on July 21st to take immediate effect, proposes permanent regulations for data center construction and operation. These regulations would prohibit data center campuses exceeding 500,000 square feet and prevent individual data centers of any size from being built near homes, businesses, schools, or public attractions like the zoo.
Another bill that passed is a temporary moratorium on all new data center proposals, effective until November 1st. This pause is intended to provide the council with additional time to finalize comprehensive regulations and rules. Like the permanent regulations bill, this moratorium also requires one final vote on July 21st. However, if the permanent regulations are enacted, the temporary moratorium may become redundant.
Finally, a newer bill introduced by the mayor's office also advanced. This legislation aims for the city to acquire a specific parcel of land adjacent to the zoo, a site previously identified by DC BLOX as a potential data center location. The mayor's office indicated that if this bill passes two more votes and the land is successfully purchased, it could be utilized for transportation infrastructure, city offices, or a new fire station.
