Allendale Township officials have unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data centers and other large-scale energy projects. This pause will allow the township to develop new regulations and review existing zoning ordinances before any proposals are submitted. The action follows similar moves by other communities in Michigan.

The Allendale Township Board in Michigan has unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data centers, large-scale solar farms, wind farms, and battery storage facilities. The decision, reported by MLive, was adopted on June 8 and aims to provide township leaders with time to develop comprehensive regulations for such projects.

During this temporary halt, officials plan to study the potential impacts of these developments on public health, infrastructure, and the environment. They will also review current zoning ordinances and gather public input to inform any changes to local regulations before considering new proposals.

Although no data center proposals have yet been submitted in Allendale Township, the board's proactive measure seeks to establish zoning standards in advance. This move aligns with actions taken by over 50 other Michigan communities, including Cascade Township, which recently enacted a six-month moratorium. The decision contrasts with Lowell Township, which rejected a proposed moratorium amid ongoing opposition to a planned Microsoft data center.
