Hundreds of Sedgwick County, Kansas residents spoke out against data centers at a county listening session, citing concerns over energy costs, environmental impacts, and infrastructure damage. The county has a temporary moratorium on data centers in place, which commissioners indicated could last longer than the current June 11 expiration date as they work to craft appropriate policies and regulations.

Gov: Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners, Andale City Council
Hundreds of Sedgwick County residents voiced strong opposition to the development of data centers in the area. Residents cited concerns over energy costs, pollution, water usage, infrastructure damage, and noise pollution. Andale City Council member Hollie Martin stated that the county does not need the data centers, as they are a "want" rather than a "need." Sedgwick County is currently under a temporary moratorium on data centers, which will allow time to establish policies and regulations. Commissioner Jim Howell emphasized the need to "do this right." While some residents, like Jeremy Wheeler, argued that data centers are necessary for modern technology, the majority of speakers urged the commissioners to either prohibit the centers or impose strict regulations. The county plans to hold another town hall to discuss the issue further.
