Denton considers hitting pause on data center development
Denton city leaders are considering a pause on new data center developments due to concerns about their massive electricity consumption, strain on city resources, potential impact on neighborhoods, and environmental implications. The city currently has two data centers, with the largest potentially requiring as much electricity as the entire city at full production. Denton city leaders are planning to implement a pause on data center developments within the city. This decision comes amidst growing concerns over the substantial electricity demands of existing and potential future data centers. Currently, Denton hosts two data centers, with the largest one on Jim Crystal Road projected to consume as much electricity as the entire city of Denton when fully operational.
Mayor Chris Watts articulated that the initiative is driven by the anticipated, rather than current, impacts of such developments, particularly regarding the strain on city resources, local neighborhoods, and the environment. He emphasized the "unpredictability" of these impacts as a primary motivator for the proposed action.
Earlier in the week, the Denton City Council instructed city staff to formulate recommendations for stricter regulations concerning data center developments. This move signals the city's intent to proactively manage the growth of the data center industry within its jurisdiction.
