Luzerne County’s proposed data center zoning ordinance amendment up for discussion Thursday
Luzerne County’s Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss revisions to a proposed data center zoning ordinance amendment. The measure would impose extensive conditions and require special-exception approval for data center applications in 19 municipalities that rely on county zoning, but it must still advance through the commission and County Council.
The Luzerne County Planning Commission will discuss additional revisions to a proposed data center zoning ordinance amendment at a public meeting in Wilkes-Barre. The commission previously recommended the amendment after multiple revisions and public comment sessions, but the county law office requested more time for review and further changes.
If approved by the commission and later adopted by County Council, the amendment would apply in 19 municipalities that use county zoning. It would establish extensive conditions for data center development and require all proposals to undergo a more extensive special-exception review by the county Zoning Hearing Board. The council would need to hold an introduction vote, conduct a public hearing and approve the measure by a majority vote.
