The Sangamon County Board recently voted 17-10, with one abstention, to approve a land proposal for a new data center in the county. The vote followed a contentious public meeting at the BOS Center, where hundreds gathered and more than 60 individuals signed up to speak, though only a dozen were allowed.
The proposed data center, spearheaded by CyrusOne, drew strong reactions from the community. Opponents expressed significant distrust of CyrusOne and voiced concerns that the project would remove prime agricultural land from production, potentially harming the local agricultural industry, including seed and fertilizer companies and grain elevators. Board member David Mendenhal specifically highlighted the threat to farmland, stating it would have a negative long-term effect on the egg industry.
Conversely, supporters, including board member Tom Adonia, emphasized the substantial economic benefits of the project, citing the creation of numerous jobs and an influx of tax revenue for outlying areas, school districts, and water infrastructure. Adonia acknowledged community fears but asserted the project's overall positive impact.
Despite the intense debate, which saw some individuals escorted out of the meeting due to disruptions, the board's approval means CyrusOne will proceed with its plans. The vote specifically approved the land for the data center, and CyrusOne will still need to submit a formal proposal for the project itself.
