Open House Tuesday for PPL upgrades near Lancaster city data center
PPL Electric Utilities will host an open house in Lancaster to discuss about 16.4 miles of new and upgraded transmission lines planned south and east of the city. The project includes an underground connection to a switchyard serving the Lancaster AI Hub East data center and is expected to be built in 2028 and 2029, subject to state regulatory approval.
PPL Electric Utilities will hold an open house in Lancaster to discuss a planned $36.4 million transmission upgrade project involving approximately 16.4 miles of new and rebuilt high-voltage lines in Lancaster city and surrounding townships. The work is intended to replace aging infrastructure, improve reliability and meet growing regional electricity demand, with construction expected in 2028 and 2029.
The project includes a 2.1-mile underground line along Pitney Road connecting to a PPL switchyard being built beside the Lancaster AI Hub East data center on Greenfield Road. The switchyard is part of separate infrastructure approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to serve a large customer whose load is expected to reach 350 megawatts in 2028. PPL says the data center customer will pay for infrastructure used solely for its operations, while some project costs will be shared by the utility and its customers.
