Jackson County strikes down AI data centers with ban

At a recent Jackson County Commission meeting, a significant decision was made regarding AI data centers, culminating in a permanent ban. Community members and panhandle residents from neighboring counties filled the Ernie Padgett board room to provide testimony.
Following extensive public input, including concerns from an eco-tour guide about the impact on waterways and discussions about data centers' water-intensive cooling processes, Commissioners voted in favor of the permanent ban. Concurrently, a previous moratorium vote was rescinded. The permanent ban is anticipated to take effect following a second public hearing.
