Metro Louisville is seeking public feedback on new draft regulations for data center projects. These proposed rules, which include a size limit of 500,000 square feet, would not apply to a large hyperscale data center currently under construction in Rubbertown. The existing project is expected to consume as much electricity as 280,000 homes.

Metro Louisville is soliciting public feedback on its recently drafted regulations concerning new data center developments. These proposed rules, which were introduced last week by the Planning Commission and Office of Planning, stipulate that future data centers could not exceed 500,000 square feet.

However, the regulations would not impact a hyperscale data center already under construction in Rubbertown, a project projected to span 1.5 million square feet across seven buildings. Metro Councilman Marcus Winkler expressed concern that these regulations might be insufficient and implemented too late, acknowledging that the existing project is proceeding legally under older rules. Louisville Gas and Electric reports that the Rubbertown facility, once fully operational, will consume as much electricity as 280,000 homes. The first phase of this project, initially slated for an October opening, is now expected to be delayed.
