Ypsilanti Township residents continue fight against U-M/Los Alamos center at second town hall
Ypsilanti Township residents rallied against the University of Michigan’s proposed high-speed computing center being developed with Los Alamos National Laboratory. At a second town hall, residents demanded that the facility be relocated or canceled, citing concerns including the infrastructure needed to support its power demand.
Residents of Ypsilanti Township held a rally before a second town hall meeting about the University of Michigan’s proposed high-speed computing center with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Protesters used signs and vehicle horns to oppose construction near the township, while former Washtenaw County Commissioner Michelle Deatrick and township officials addressed the crowd.
University officials repeated their case that the research facility is needed and would be a good neighbor, but residents again interrupted the meeting and called for the project to be built elsewhere or abandoned. The protest also highlighted concerns about infrastructure, including a proposed 110-megawatt substation associated with the facility.
