Supervisors discuss goals to pursue over next two years
The Lincoln County Board of Supervisors discussed its goals for the next two years, including addressing the rise of data centers in Wisconsin. The board acknowledged public opposition to data centers, citing environmental impacts, noise pollution, and limited long-term job creation. Supervisors plan to further investigate how to locally approach data center development.
The Lincoln County Board of Supervisors, during a meeting last month in Merrill, outlined strategic priorities to pursue over the next two years. Board Chair Don Friske urged proactive engagement from members before their terms expire in 2028.
Among the various topics discussed was the increasing number of data centers being built across Wisconsin and the country. The board acknowledged public concerns regarding these facilities, noting opposition often stems from potential negative environmental impacts, noise pollution, and the scarcity of long-term employment opportunities. Conversely, supporters highlight the economic growth and global innovation that data centers can foster.
The board indicated its intent to conduct a more thorough examination of how to address data center development at the local level. Other objectives included promoting Lincoln County, expanding broadband internet, supporting housing developments, improving infrastructure, and fostering population sustainability and job growth. The board is scheduled to continue discussing its two-year goals at its next meeting on July 21.
