Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell is advocating for the city to acquire land near the Nashville Zoo, citing a public need for future airport expansion and relocation of metro services, which would also block a proposed data center. The Metro council has passed the first vote on a condemnation ordinance, and a final vote on data center restrictions is expected later this month.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell has publicly stated that the city needs to acquire land currently eyed for a data center near the Nashville Zoo. According to News 2's Jacquie Pidgeon, Mayor O'Connell explained that the land is crucial for future needs related to the Nashville International Airport's FAA-approved runway expansion, which will necessitate the relocation of several metro operations from Southeast Nashville.

Metro's director of law asserts that this public need provides a valid basis for the city to pursue eminent domain. The director highlighted that General Services has been seeking land in this sector of Nashville for years, emphasizing the urgent need to relocate services and warehouses once the airport expansion progresses. The city is prepared to defend its position in court.

Adding to the developments, a condemnation ordinance has already passed its initial Metro council vote. Council members are also scheduled to take a final vote later this month on broader restrictions concerning data centers.
