Denton City Council takes first step toward a possible temporary moratorium on AI data centers
The Denton City Council has unanimously directed city staff to explore a possible temporary moratorium on AI data centers. This decision comes amid community concerns regarding the environmental impact, infrastructure demands, and energy consumption of these facilities. The council seeks to evaluate whether existing data centers align with projections and to develop a comprehensive policy for future applications.
The Denton City Council has taken an initial step towards a potential temporary moratorium on AI data centers, with council members voting unanimously to direct staff to research the issue. Council member Nick Stevens proposed the discussion to assess the impact of data centers on the Denton community, citing concerns about infrastructure demands, environmental effects, and financial returns. This move reflects growing community anxiety in Texas over the proliferation of data centers, particularly regarding their substantial energy and water consumption, as well as quality-of-life issues.
Denton currently hosts two AI data centers: Core Scientific's hyperscale center and QumulusAI's planned modular facility. Core Scientific recently expanded its operations, leading to a modified power-purchase agreement with the city for increased power access. This expansion, and the subsequent need for additional energy resources, fueled some of the current concerns. While no new data centers are immediately in the pipeline, partly due to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) temporarily limiting new requests, the council aims to establish a clear policy for future developments.
Discussions also touched upon the possibility of a citizen-initiated referendum for a full ban on AI data centers, though Councilman Stevens advocated for a council-led policy solution. He emphasized the importance of a comprehensive policy that prevents any industry from drastically increasing energy demand overnight and ensures community sentiment guides development decisions. The City Council's action signals a proactive approach to managing the growth of the data center industry within Denton.
