Denton currently hosts two AI data centers: Core Scientific's hyperscale center and QumulusAI's planned modular facility. Core Scientific recently expanded its operations, leading to a modified power-purchase agreement with the city for increased power access. This expansion, and the subsequent need for additional energy resources, fueled some of the current concerns. While no new data centers are immediately in the pipeline, partly due to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) temporarily limiting new requests, the council aims to establish a clear policy for future developments.
Discussions also touched upon the possibility of a citizen-initiated referendum for a full ban on AI data centers, though Councilman Stevens advocated for a council-led policy solution.
