The City of Tyler's Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled to review a special use permit application for a substantial Bitcoin mining facility. Developer Vulcan Core proposes constructing a 12,500 MW facility near Downtown Tyler, with data center operator Barrio slated to be the final lessee.

Mark Bunstev of Vulcan Core stated at a community meeting on June 15 that there would be "no negative effects to any of the nearby homes." However, local residents have raised concerns about potential impacts, specifically citing water usage and noise pollution.

The proposed facility requires a special use permit because data centers do not fall into a specific zoning category within Tyler's current light industrial regulations, a common issue in many Texas cities. The commission will discuss the permit at its Tuesday meeting, held at 1:30 p.m. at Tyler City Hall.
