Zeeland Township residents are in the midst of a legal challenge to preserve their role as intervenors in the state regulatory process concerning RWE Americas' proposed $330 million Silver Maple Solar Farm. The 200-megawatt project, intended for 1,900 acres of agriculturally zoned land, has faced strong opposition from neighbors in both Zeeland and Jamestown townships since RWE Americas filed its application with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) in April.
During a pre-hearing on June 4, many residents, including adjacent landowner Valerie Driesenga, successfully secured intervenor status. However, others like Cadence DeVree and Christi Meppelink, who do not share an adjacent border with the project, are contending with a motion filed by RWE's legal team seeking to dismiss their "permissive petitions to intervene," arguing their participation is duplicative. Administrative Law Judge James Varchetti granted these residents one week to respond, with RWE's attorneys given another week to reply, before a final ruling on their intervenor status is expected by June 25.
In response to these legal maneuvers, the affected neighbors are actively fundraising, including a pancake breakfast, to secure their own legal representation. The Michigan Public Service Commission is slated to issue a final decision on the Silver Maple Solar project by April 3, 2027.
