Hundreds of people gathered in Wichita, Kansas for a Sedgwick County town hall meeting to discuss the potential impacts of data center development in their rural, agricultural communities.
Sedgwick County officials first approved a 90-day pause on data center applications in January to allow time to review potential zoning rules. That pause was recently extended until June 11 to gather more public input.
Residents from areas near Andale, Colwich, and Garden Plain voiced concerns about how large-scale technology projects could alter the character of their faith-based, farming-focused communities. Environmental issues like impacts on farmland, soil, and water resources were also raised.
County Commission Chairman Jeff Blubaugh said the purpose of the meeting was to directly hear from constituents as officials consider new data center regulations. Another public meeting focused specifically on zoning is scheduled for March 31.
County leaders confirmed there are currently no data center applications on file, but residents appear concerned about the potential for such development in their rural communities.
