Over 100 residents gathered in Rockford, Illinois, for an informational meeting to discuss the potential impacts of recently announced data center projects in the area. The session aimed to address numerous community questions and concerns, particularly regarding the unknown aspects of these developments and information considered vital before project approval.
To provide a clearer understanding, Eyewitness News toured a Chicago-based Digital Realty data center, offering an inside look at server room infrastructure and cooling methods. A major point of discussion was the significant energy consumption of data centers. Digital Realty representative Orfall Rock stated that while energy use is considerable, continuous investments are made in upgrading infrastructure for greater energy efficiency and maximizing facility footprints.
Environmental expert Ann Lasses raised additional concerns about water usage and potential pollution, noting the lack of specific information on the cooling systems—whether air or water-cooled—and their energy requirements. This is especially pertinent given the proposed location next to a county forest preserve. City of Rockford officials confirmed that the data center projects are still in the early phases of planning.
