Holiday campers struggle for space as data center workers fill RV park
The Unhitched Sleepy Hollow RV Park in Oxford, Iowa, is at capacity this Fourth of July weekend due to data center workers occupying approximately 85% of its campsites. This influx is making it difficult for long-time holiday campers to find space, although the manager notes a financial benefit for the park. Families accustomed to camping there for years are now struggling to maintain traditions.
Unhitched Sleepy Hollow RV Park in Oxford, Iowa, is experiencing its busiest season ever, with data center workers occupying an estimated 85% of its campsites during the Fourth of July weekend. Campground manager Stephanie Chrisman reported that this unprecedented demand has made it challenging for traditional holiday campers, including families who have visited for generations, to secure spots without extensive prior planning.
Kynsie Anderson's family, for instance, had to share a single camper for their annual Fourth of July tradition due to the lack of available sites. While acknowledging the inconvenience for long-time patrons, Chrisman noted the financial benefits of having long-term guests from the data center industry. Despite the displacement of some regular campers, Anderson's family intends to continue their tradition.
