The Coalition for Responsible Data Centers, in partnership with IBEW Local 134, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150, and the Chicago Laborers' District Council-LIUNA, has initiated a six-week statewide digital campaign across Illinois. The campaign aims to advocate for a balanced approach to data center development, emphasizing the contributions of union labor, community benefits, and a fact-based discussion.

Neil Parish, director of the Coalition for Responsible Data Centers, stated that the campaign seeks to amplify the voices of skilled tradespeople and communities that host data center projects, often overlooked in the broader debate. The advertisements feature union workers discussing careers and apprenticeship opportunities, as well as local elected officials highlighting the revenue generation and public service support that responsible data center projects can provide to host communities.

Ahead of the Illinois General Assembly's fall veto session, the coalition intends to inform policymakers and community leaders. While not advocating for specific legislation, the group supports a comprehensive policy framework. This framework includes protections for residential and small-business ratepayers, adherence to grid reliability standards, promotion of efficient energy and water use, ensuring transparency for host communities, and upholding labor protections such as project labor agreements, prevailing wages, and registered apprenticeships. The campaign underscores the belief that responsible development and economic growth are compatible goals for Illinois.
