At a "Community Conversation" forum in Port Washington, Wisconsin, residents voiced skepticism regarding the massive $15 billion Lighthouse data center campus. The project, developed by Vantage Data Centers in partnership with Oracle and OpenAI, is planned for 672 acres next to Interstate 43 and will include four data centers, with operations expected to begin around 2028. Residents, including data analyst Christina Pactengale and Town of Port Washington resident Joy Hayward, raised concerns about the project's environmental impact, water and energy usage, noise, and light pollution.
Misty Allen, Vice President of Public Policy North America for Vantage Data Centers, acknowledged that "change is happening" and emphasized the event's purpose was to inform residents. The company highlighted potential economic benefits, thousands of jobs, the planting of over 2,000 trees, and an 8-foot berm. However, many attendees felt their questions were not adequately addressed. The project recently faced a setback when the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin revoked a "completeness" determination for a related transmission line.
