
Scientists warn rising energy demands from data centers puts Iowa at a 'fork in the road'

Nearly 200 researchers and faculty from across Iowa have released the 16th annual Iowa Climate Statement, warning that the state faces a critical decision regarding its energy future due to rapidly increasing electricity demand. The statement highlights that while electrification of buildings, transportation, and industry contributes to new demand, most of the increase is driven by the proliferation of data centers, with Iowa ranking among the top five states for data centers per capita.
Organizers, including Jacqueline Dowling, an assistant professor at the University of Iowa, predict a potential 30% increase in peak electricity load in Iowa over the next decade. Scientists advocate for expanding renewable energy sources like wind and solar, rather than reverting to fossil fuels such as gas plants and coal. They argue that renewables are essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting Iowans from air pollution, and stabilizing energy costs, which have historically been 30% below the national average due to Iowa's 60% renewable energy generation.
Despite Iowa's leadership in renewable energy, a recent report from the Iowa Environmental Council indicated an uptick in fossil fuel use for electricity generation, with coal usage increasing by about 50% from 2024 to 2025. The researchers emphasized the link between fossil fuel burning and climate change impacts, such as increased flooding, droughts, and storms in Iowa, as well as adverse public health effects from air pollution.
