Bay County officials formulate approach to AI data center issue
Bay County Commissioners are taking steps toward a six-month temporary moratorium on data centers, following similar actions in neighboring Jackson and Walton counties. While a motion to completely ban data centers failed, the commission approved a resolution to signal impending land regulation changes. The proposed moratorium will next go before the Planning Board for public review.
Bay County Commissioners are initiating discussions and taking preliminary steps towards addressing the issue of data center development within the county. This comes as neighboring Jackson County has begun implementing a year-long moratorium, and Walton County officials are working towards a complete ban on data centers.
During a recent Bay County Commission meeting, Commissioner Daniel Rafeal's motion to ban data centers entirely did not receive a second and therefore failed. However, commissioners generally agreed they do not want to see large-scale data centers in Bay County, citing concerns over pollutants and quality of life for residents.
Commissioners voted to approve a resolution, which serves as a "red flag" to potential applicants, indicating the county's intent to change its land regulation codes before a full moratorium is enacted. This resolution signals that new laws will be put in place to prevent large-scale data centers, which are largely undesired in the community. The proposed six-month moratorium will next be presented to the Planning Board, and the public will be notified for input.
