Frankfort votes 5-2 in favor of DataOne’s proposed $7 billion data center
The Frankfort City Council voted 5-2 to approve a community enhancement resolution supporting DataOne's proposed $7 billion data center. The vote does not authorize construction; DataOne must receive approval in two additional votes and complete environmental and economic impact studies. Opposition remains active, with concerns about water, lighting and whether the project will benefit local residents.
The Frankfort City Council voted 5-2 in favor of a community enhancement resolution tied to DataOne's proposed $7 billion data center in Frankfort, Indiana. Mayor Judy Sheets said the agreement includes stipulations related to issues including water and lighting, and that the company will not receive a construction permit unless those conditions are met.
The project still requires two additional rounds of voting and the release of environmental and economic impact studies before construction can begin. Kimberly Duff of Clinton County Progressives criticized DataOne's public open houses and said local opposition remains widespread, arguing that the economic benefits of data centers primarily accrue to high-tech companies rather than the broader community.
