Activists, students and residents rallied at New Mexico State University against Oracle’s proposed 1,400-acre Project Jupiter data center in Doña Ana County. Protesters cited concerns about water use, air pollution and long-term environmental impacts, while Oracle said it replaced gas turbines with Bloom Energy fuel cells to reduce emissions and operational water use.
Dozens of protesters gathered at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces to oppose Oracle’s proposed Project Jupiter data center, a 1,400-acre development planned for Doña Ana County. The demonstration was organized by Youth United for Climate Crisis Action, along with Stop Project Jupiter and other activists and students, who called for the project to be shut down completely.
Protesters focused on potential water demands, air pollution and long-term environmental consequences. Oracle said it had replaced the project’s original gas turbine design with Bloom Energy fuel cells, which the company said would reduce local air pollutants, minimize operational water use and lower emissions by 35% while supporting New Mexico’s clean-energy goals. Activist Johnathan Juarez said opponents were not satisfied with mitigation measures and were demanding a complete ban on the project.
