The Department of the Air Force is investigating the feasibility of establishing AI data centers on approximately 4,700 acres of underutilized military land across Alaska, specifically at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), Eielson Air Force Base, and Clear Space Force Station.
This initiative has prompted significant concerns from environmental groups and local residents, particularly in Anchorage. Dyani Lezama, state director of Alaska Environment, highlighted potential negative impacts such as high water usage, increased noise, and a potential overreliance on "dirty energy" due to Anchorage's current power infrastructure limitations. Lezama advocates for a cautious approach, emphasizing the need for regulations and safeguards before any development proceeds.
Jim Kerr echoed concerns about Anchorage's insufficient electrical energy infrastructure, noting a lack of natural gas to support such a demanding power load. Additionally, Alice Ogden expressed worries about the broader environmental destruction that could affect local wildlife and plant life.
As of now, no proposals have been approved. Stakeholders are urging for careful consideration and the establishment of robust regulatory frameworks to mitigate environmental and infrastructural risks.
