The City of Eugene rejected a proposal to build a data center at the former Hynix site in west Eugene, saying the facility is not allowed under current E-1 zoning.
The proposal has renewed debate over data centers, which power technology behind streaming, online shopping, cloud storage and AI. Oregon already has about 130 facilities, including three in Eugene.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation plans to propose a moratorium on new large data centers at the Eugene City Council meeting on Sept. 14.
