Topeka city leaders held initial discussions on potential data center developments and regulations in response to strong community opposition. On July 7, the Topeka City Council convened to discuss potential data center developments, a contentious topic drawing unanimous opposition from residents. Although no specific data center proposal has been submitted, Mayor Spencer Duncan noted that city leaders felt it was important to begin discussions on regulations given data center conversations across Northeast Kansas.

Leigha Bowling, Topeka Economic Development Director, highlighted a "gap in the city's zoning policy," prompting the city's move to establish "protections." Residents, including Aimee Gillette, expressed concerns that without a moratorium, it would be too late to act once a formal application is filed. Residents advocated for a moratorium to allow time to examine the issues surrounding such developments.

Mayor Duncan welcomed the feedback, stating it would guide future conversations. The city's next steps involve updating the zoning code, with the planning commission set to hold a public hearing next month and the full council expected to vote on these considerations in September.
