AI and Data Centers: 101 draws a crown of concerned residents

Pahrump resident Justyne Lobello, with 17 years in digital marketing, organized and presented "AI and Data Centers: 101" at the Pahrump Community Library. Her initiative was a response to community concerns about potential data center developments in the valley, aiming to equip residents with knowledge to engage effectively in upcoming governmental meetings concerning these projects.

During her presentation, Lobello provided an overview of AI, differentiating between local and cloud-based applications, and detailed various types of AI with a focus on Large Language Models. She then shifted to data centers, explaining different types and emphasizing that the growth of AI, surveillance AI, and crypto-coin mining is driving the proliferation of hyperscale data centers. She incorporated videos, including one about a Meta data center's alleged water impacts in Morgan County, Georgia, and an interview with environmental activist Erin Brockovich, who is tracking data center impacts nationwide.

Lobello urged attendees to demand transparency and regulations, encouraging them to remain vocal, attend local meetings (including commissioners, water, and electric boards), and participate in protests. Nevada Assembly candidate Dr. Jon Penn Junejo also spoke, stressing the importance of elected officials listening to community concerns due to potential long-term health and environmental impacts of data centers.

Upcoming events in Nye County include a county-sponsored forum on data centers, a presentation by Manse Technology Campus on its proposed Pahrump data center project, and a public hearing by the county commission on a bill regarding a possible ban on data centers.
