Bucksport Town Council moves data center moratorium to second reading, public hearing
The Bucksport Town Council advanced a proposed 180-day moratorium on data center development to a second reading and public hearing. Supporters cited the need to study impacts on infrastructure, natural resources and quality of life, while opponents argued that development could attract investment and ease the town’s tax burden.
The Bucksport Town Council voted to advance a proposed moratorium ordinance on data centers to a second reading and public hearing. The proposed 180-day pause follows discussion of the town’s potential appeal to developers because of its former paper mill infrastructure, deep-water access and nearby power plant. A company has reportedly expressed interest in developing a data center at the privately owned mill site, though it was not identified.
Council members Tracey Hair, Paul Rabs and Mayor Paul Bissonnette supported pausing development while the town reviews infrastructure, environmental and economic considerations and awaits a state task force report. Councilor Ed Rankin Jr. opposed advancing the broader ban, saying data center investment could stimulate business and provide tax relief, though he said he could support a moratorium limited to facilities larger than 20 megawatts. A public hearing is scheduled as part of the council’s next steps.
