Nassau County commissioners are holding the first of two public hearings regarding a proposed one-year temporary ban on new data center proposals within the county. The ordinance, if approved, would halt data center development. County officials confirmed that a vote will not occur tonight as two public hearings are legally required.
Residents, such as Rene Shavey who recently moved from Oregon, are actively opposing the proposals, citing concerns about environmental destruction and increased water and energy prices for working citizens. This first hearing follows Governor Ron DeSantis's signing of Senate Bill 484, which implements new restrictions on data center companies and aims to protect communities from high water and power costs.
Allison McCulla, Chair of the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners, expressed gratitude for the governor's action, stating it provides the necessary "teeth" for the county's upcoming 12-month period of deliberation. She encouraged residents to engage with facts rather than emotions to work effectively for the county's best interests. The second public hearing and the expected vote on the moratorium are scheduled for June 8th.
