Amazon announced a $1 billion, five-year investment in communities where it operates data centers, supporting education, job training, water preservation and other local priorities. The pledge comes as the company faces political and public backlash over data center impacts on water supplies, electricity prices and the environment.

Amazon plans to invest $1 billion over five years in communities with a significant data center presence, funding education, workforce training, water preservation and other local initiatives. Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon’s cloud computing arm, said the company has already invested more than $1 billion in such communities over the past three years.

Garman said Amazon will stop using nondisclosure agreements with government agencies involved in its data center projects and will hold open houses to provide information to residents. He criticized what he described as misinformation about environmental and energy impacts, while warning that more than 100 proposed data center moratoriums nationwide could slow the U.S. artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout. The announcement comes amid growing concern among voters about data center effects on electricity costs and water supplies.
