The rapid expansion of AI data centers is poised to dramatically increase electricity demand across the United States, potentially leading to higher monthly electric bills for American households. Research from the International Energy Agency and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas projects data centers could account for up to half of all new U.S. power consumption by 2030, with natural gas meeting a significant portion of this growth.
Researchers modeled the grid's response to this surge, estimating that electricity generation costs could rise by 20% to 30% by 2028 without new data centers. This forecast does not account for new power plants being built quickly enough to meet demand, as new projects can take over five years to connect to the grid. While household bills won't see an immediate, equivalent jump, the wholesale price increases are expected to steadily translate into higher retail rates.
The enormous power requirements of data centers necessitate substantial upgrades to power plants, transmission lines, and substations. The question of who bears the cost for these infrastructure improvements — data centers or general consumers — is a complex regulatory challenge. Studies indicate that slower development of renewable energy sources and existing transmission constraints could exacerbate price pressures.
This issue has spurred various government responses. Former President Donald Trump has advocated for expanding AI infrastructure while supporting voluntary pledges to mitigate utility bill impacts. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a halt to data center projects seeking grid connection until comprehensive audits are completed. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is moving to tighten oversight on large-scale data center development, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul has enacted a one-year moratorium on new hyperscale data centers, as states nationwide grapple with balancing new investment against rising electricity costs and grid reliability concerns.
