Project Longhorn Data Center Moves Ahead in Bastrop County
The $366 million Project Longhorn data center in Cedar Creek, Bastrop County, is moving forward after a statewide Texas pause on new data center permits. The project is expected to begin construction in late November, while EdgeConneX is developing several much larger campuses nearby amid concerns about power demand, water use and state regulatory audits.
Project Longhorn, a planned 498,165-square-foot data center and business building near Earl Callahan Road and Walter Hoffman Road in Cedar Creek, is advancing after being delayed by Texas restrictions on new data center permits. Construction is expected to start in late November, with completion targeted for January 2028. The project is reportedly in talks with Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude language models.
The statewide pause was ordered by Gov. Greg Abbott while the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, ERCOT and the Texas Water Development Board audit data center impacts on electricity and water systems. EdgeConneX is also planning multiple Cedar Creek campuses totaling billions of dollars in projected construction. The company says it will use air-cooled or closed-loop cooling systems and pay for project-specific power infrastructure, but the combined developments' effects on rural land, grid capacity and water resources remain under review.
