Pittsburg's approved 99-megawatt data center has become a major issue in the city council election, with residents and candidates criticizing the project's environmental impacts, lack of transparency and limited public involvement. Three candidates are calling for a moratorium on future data center applications, while the city has paused the project and formed a citizen advisory committee to develop standards for future facilities.

An approved 99-megawatt data center at Pittsburg Technology Park is influencing the race for three seats on the Pittsburg City Council. Developed by AVAIO Digital, the first phase would occupy about 22 acres of the former Delta View Golf Course and include a three-story facility, backup generators, an electrical substation and a commercial power switching yard. The project has not yet broken ground, and power and infrastructure agreements remain under negotiation.

Residents have raised concerns about the project's environmental effects and said they were not adequately informed that the proposed technology park would include a data center. Candidate Amhari Perkins has protested the project, while Perkins, Alvin Nelson and Pauline Johnson support a moratorium on future data center applications. Mayor Dionne Adams said the city has paused the project to allow more discussion, public engagement and education, and announced a citizen advisory committee to recommend standards for future data centers. The facility's backup generators are expected to use air cooling with recycled water from the Delta Diablo Treatment Plant.
