Abbott announces data center standards compliance

Governor Greg Abbott announced from Austin, Texas, that several data center companies, including Amazon, Lancium, Cipher Digital, EdgeConneX, and Stream Data Centers, have committed to complying with newly established statewide standards. These guidelines, now being implemented across Texas, aim to safeguard the electric grid, conserve water resources, and protect local communities from increased costs or diminished quality of life. Governor Abbott emphasized that these "commonsense statewide standards" are already proving effective, noting one instance where a non-compliant data center ceased operations before construction began.

The Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) are directed to meticulously examine each data center project, focusing on its impact on grid stability, water usage, and community well-being. Both entities are required to receive and audit comprehensive information from data center companies before project approvals. Any company failing to meet ERCOT's audit process faces potential denial of its project. The Governor stated that these directives ensure informed decisions for grid stability and reliability and provide crucial "guardrails" for Texas communities.
