Evergy says data centers could help hold down electricity rates
Evergy told Riley County commissioners that growing data center demand could help limit electricity rate pressure by covering more of the utility’s fixed costs. The company said it is working to protect other customers from the costs of serving large data center facilities.
Evergy Senior Director of External Affairs Jason Klindt told Riley County commissioners that the utility’s expanding data center customer base could help moderate electricity rates. Large facilities may cover a greater share of Evergy’s fixed costs, potentially reducing pressure on other customers.
Klindt also discussed the economic benefits of data centers and said Evergy seeks to prevent the costs of serving the facilities from being passed disproportionately to existing customers. He noted that data centers range from small, user-focused operations to massive campuses built for companies such as Google and Meta.
