Texas Tribune Finds Greg Abbott Received $9 Million From Data Center-Linked Donors
The Texas Tribune found that Gov. Greg Abbott has received about $9 million from donors with direct or indirect ties to data centers since July 2025, even as he has called for tighter industry regulations. Abbott paused approvals for data centers seeking grid connections pending an ERCOT review, while lawmakers consider changes involving tax incentives, electricity, water use and local oversight.
An analysis by The Texas Tribune found that data center-related donors contributed about $9 million to Gov. Greg Abbott since July 2025, including roughly $4.9 million from people and companies that develop, own or operate data centers. Major contributors included Black Mountain CEO Rhett Bennett and Black Mountain, former Fermi America CEO Toby Neugebauer, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and other donors with direct or indirect industry connections.
The contributions came as Abbott shifted toward stricter data center oversight. He recommended ending a major tax break, paused approvals for facilities seeking connections to the Texas electric grid pending a statewide audit, and said data centers should pay their own way, provide their own water and avoid disrupting communities. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and other Republican officials have also backed a moratorium or additional regulation, while Democratic candidates have criticized Abbott for accepting industry donations.
The article said the donations reflect the industry’s effort to influence negotiations over future Texas policy. Proposed or discussed measures include changes to tax exemptions, electricity demand, cooling systems, water efficiency and local authority over project siting, with the Texas Legislature expected to address the issue in a future session.
