The Kearney Planning Commission has unanimously recommended approval of a conditional use permit for a new data center project, named Project Horizon, at Tech One Crossing. The development is a partnership between Statewood Digital Ventures and Marathon Digital Holdings.
Project Horizon is planned in three phases, with the first phase including an office building, a data center building, and enclosed equipment yards. This initial phase will lead to the decommissioning of an existing cryptocurrency mining operation on the site. Subsequent phases will add another data center building and extend both structures eastward onto the current mining property.
The proposed facility will utilize a closed-loop chilled water system to conserve water by reusing it for cooling, rather than continuously consuming new water. Staff recommended approval with five conditions, which include annual disclosure of chemicals, batteries, and hazardous materials, and a requirement for development to commence within two years. The recommendation will now proceed to the Kearney City Council for a final decision on September 8th.
