Residents in Loudoun County, Virginia are filing numerous complaints about excessive noise and diesel fumes from data centers, particularly after a power failure at a Vantage Data Centers campus necessitated the use of backup generators. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is receiving these grievances as residents express significant frustration over the health impacts and diminished quality of life caused by the proximity of data centers to residential areas.
Loudoun County, Virginia, home to over 200 data centers with another 100 in the pipeline, is experiencing a flood of complaints from residents concerning noise and generator fumes. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, which approved the placement of many of these facilities near homes, is now facing resident backlash.
A specific incident highlighted involves the Vantage Data Centers Ashburn II campus in Sterling, Virginia. Following a power failure on July 16, the data center switched to auxiliary power supplied by diesel generators. Residents reported a significant increase in noise, with one comparing it to an "Air Force plane," and noted that the emissions irritated their throats and lungs, even waking them up at night. Children's sleep has also been affected.
Homeowners expressed deep dissatisfaction, stating they "didn't sign up for this" and that the data center has become "a curse on our life." The ongoing issues underscore the growing tensions between rapid data center development and community quality of life in Loudoun County.
