Texas Permit Loophole Allows AI Data Centers to Build Power Plants With Minimal Oversight
A report indicates that a permit loophole in Texas allows AI data centers, like OpenAI's Stargate facility in Abilene, to construct polluting power plants with minimal public notice. This practice is raising concerns about environmental impact and transparency for nearby residents.
According to a report from Floodlight, a loophole in Texas's permitting system is enabling AI data centers, including OpenAI's Stargate facility in Abilene, to construct gas-fired power plants with significantly reduced public notice and regulatory oversight. This particular permit, originally intended for less impactful operations such as dry cleaners, is now reportedly being exploited by data center developers.
Thermal imagery captured in late March reportedly showed one of the ten gas-fired turbines at OpenAI's Abilene data center in operation. This development has raised environmental concerns and sparked discussions regarding the potential impacts on surrounding communities due to the associated pollution and lack of transparency.
