The Greensboro City Council continued its review of data center development during a work session featuring university experts, including NC State University professor Bill Rand. The session examined data centers’ uses beyond artificial intelligence, as well as workforce development, AI research and how cities should assess the industry’s potential benefits and risks.

Greensboro’s 180-day moratorium on new data centers and similar facilities with power demands exceeding 10 megawatts remains in effect through Feb. 14, 2027. Council members also referenced Stokes County’s approval of rezoning for a proposed 1,850-acre hyperscale data center campus and are gathering information before deciding whether to adopt permanent regulations. The next session will focus on energy systems and power.
