The former AquaBounty salmon farm site in Pioneer, Ohio, is undergoing a study to determine its suitability for a data center. AquaBounty, the previous owner, stated in early August that it is in discussions with new developers regarding the site's potential for "power generation and digital infrastructure sectors," suggesting a shift from its original aquaculture purpose. The 13 Action News I-TEAM revealed that a third-party company has initiated a study into the site's electricity infrastructure.
Pioneer Mayor Ed Kidston confirmed that the village was approached by a company interested in the site's power capabilities. The company wired $25,000 to the village for a load study, which the village council approved. Mayor Kidston, while cautious about definitively calling it a data center, noted that the village would support a project that adheres to zoning regulations and offers substantial benefits to the community and local schools, capitalizing on Pioneer's public power system. The study is expected to take eight weeks to determine the precise power capacity available.
