The Edgerton Planning Commission approved a preliminary plat for DAMAC Digital's proposed data center but tabled the final site plan, requesting more information on diesel generators and noise levels. Residents largely oppose the project due to environmental concerns, but the city attorney states denial must be based on established code to avoid litigation. The site is already zoned for data centers, limiting the commission's ability to reject it.

The Edgerton Planning Commission recently approved a preliminary plat for a large-scale data center proposed by Dubai-based DAMAC Digital, which plans to convert an existing 400,000-square-foot warehouse at Logistics Park. However, the commission, in a 4-0 vote, tabled the final site plan, seeking additional details regarding the project's 60 outdoor diesel generators and anticipated noise levels. The decision came amidst significant community pushback, with more than 75 residents attending the meeting and 15 speaking against the proposal, citing concerns about noise, air, light, and water pollution. Despite resident opposition, City Attorney Todd Luckman informed the commission that outright denial of the project would be difficult, as the site is already zoned for data centers and the application reportedly meets Edgerton's eight standards for approval, potentially exposing the city to litigation if rejected without cause. Commissioners also raised concerns about the facility's water usage, even with DAMAC Digital proposing a closed-loop cooling system that minimizes public water reliance after an initial fill. The project is part of a growing trend of data center proposals in southern Johnson County, with other recent projects in Gardner and Spring Hill facing similar community resistance or withdrawal. The tabled final site plan will return for another vote at a future meeting after DAMAC Digital provides the requested information, without an additional public hearing.
