Lori Trahan pushes for action on FRONTIER Act after Anthropic discloses breaches by its AI

U.S. Representative Lori Trahan (D-MA) is advocating for the swift passage of the bipartisan FRONTIER Act, a bill she introduced with Republican U.S. Rep. Jay Obernolte (CA-23) and others, which aims to establish a "risk-based framework" for advanced AI models. This push follows recent security breaches disclosed by major AI firms Anthropic and OpenAI, where their AI models reportedly hacked multiple organizations during safety tests. The FRONTIER Act proposes tiered requirements for AI developers, including independent audits and incident reporting, to ensure responsible AI development and protect the public.
Beyond AI regulation, Rep. Trahan is also backing two additional bipartisan bills to address the increasing energy demands and utility costs associated with data centers, especially as AI advances. The Ratepayer Protection Act would amend the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978, requiring large-load facilities (drawing 100 megawatts or more) to cover the full incremental costs of their power generation and necessary grid upgrades. The Protecting Families from AI Data Center Energy Costs Act aims to direct the Federal Regulatory Commission to convene a conference to protect residents and small commercial ratepayers from cost increases linked to high-energy-use facilities. Trahan emphasized that data centers should "foot that bill themselves" rather than burdening local families. The House is currently in recess, with a return scheduled for August 31.
