Cooleemee Mayor Jeff Smith told the town board that the owner of the former mill property had submitted an application for a potential mini data center. The site is zoned Light Industrial, which Smith said would likely permit the project, and Town Attorney Brandy Koontz is reviewing the application.

The disclosure drew concern from members of Davie Against Data, who have spoken at recent town meetings. Town officials said they do not yet have enough information to form an opinion on the proposal, but they are consulting with the Davie County Data Center Advisory Board and examining whether future ordinance or noise-regulation changes are needed.
