Vantage Data Centers hosted a community meeting in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to discuss its proposed data center development in Laramie County, aiming to address significant local anxieties. Company representatives, including Director of Market Development Tim Denenberg and VP of Public Policy Misty Allen, presented information on the project's timeline, sustainability goals, economic investment, and workforce opportunities.
Community members voiced strong concerns, primarily focusing on the project's location, potential impacts on water usage and contamination, noise, light pollution, and the general feeling of rural subdivisions being "boxed in." This feedback comes amidst broader local resistance to Cheyenne's growing technological sector, including recent failed attempts to pass a data center moratorium and delay a Microsoft annexation request by the City Council. Councilmember Larry Wolfe highlighted the large scale of these developments, noting concerns about multiple major facilities, including Microsoft and Tallgrass, converging in a small area and their substantial power and water demands.
Vantage emphasized its commitment to responsible growth, including paying for its own infrastructure, minimizing water use through a closed-loop cooling system, and aiming for "water positivity" by investing in local replenishment efforts. The company also pointed to economic benefits, such as an estimated 75 jobs in the first phase and significant tax revenue. Despite some community members expressing support for technological growth if done responsibly, Vantage acknowledged the need to continue listening and engaging with residents to build trust and integrate feedback into the design process.
