The legislation, sponsored by Alderwoman Marina Demetriovic, seeks to impose a temporary halt on the creation or enlargement of data centers within the city.
The primary objective of the proposed moratorium is to provide the city with sufficient time to amend its zoning code, enabling it to better define and regulate data center facilities. During the commission hearing, various individuals spoke on the proposal, with some supporting the pause to protect communities and others raising concerns about potential negative impacts on the city's tax base, revenue generation, and small businesses reliant on data center services.
Following the Plan Commission's approval, the legislation will now proceed to the Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee for further review. If it passes through that committee, it will then require approval from the full Common Council to be officially enacted.
