Santa Fe County Commissioners have unanimously enacted an 18-month moratorium on new data center developments within the county.
This decision comes after data center proposals had previously been approved in neighboring Socorro County and Bernalillo County. The newly approved moratorium will provide Santa Fe County with time to establish and develop comprehensive strategies to address significant concerns, particularly regarding energy and water consumption associated with data centers.
Commissioner Cacari Stone emphasized the county's proactive stance, stating, "We want to be leaders in being preventative and making sure that we guarantee our communities are listened to and heard and that we're protecting our water and our resources."
