The Norman City Council unanimously passed a moratorium on data center permit approvals within city limits. This measure aims to allow city staff and the planning commission to study the potential impacts of data centers and consider future zoning regulation changes, including public input. Mayor Stephen Tyler Holman clarified that the action is a proactive step, not a response to any specific data center proposal.

The Norman City Council unanimously enacted a moratorium on approving data center permits within city limits during its Tuesday evening meeting. This decision allows city staff, the council, and the planning commission to comprehensively study the potential impacts of data center development on the city. The process will also incorporate public participation through hearings on possible amendments to current zoning regulations pertaining to data centers.

Mayor Stephen Tyler Holman emphasized that this preemptive action is not directed at any specific business or proposed project currently known to the city. Holman stated, "This is really just, like other cities in the metro, trying to get ahead of this situation." Norman joins other Oklahoma municipalities, including Luther and Broken Arrow, in implementing similar data center moratoriums.
