A proposed data center near Burgin, Kentucky, is raising concerns from leaders at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Mercer County. Billy Rankin, President and CEO of Shaker Village, expressed worries that the development could negatively impact the historic site's peaceful environment, affecting stargazing, birdsong, and the overall visitor experience. A primary concern is the unknown impact of low-frequency noise from data centers on the village's horses and other farm animals, which are known to be sensitive to sounds.

While supporters of the project highlight the potential for millions in property tax revenue for Burgin Independent Schools, Rankin argues that economic development should not come at the expense of prime farmland or the unique character of the area. He emphasizes the need for careful selection of locations for such developments. Shaker Village has actively advocated for a moratorium on data center development in Mercer County until the comprehensive plan for the county can be updated.

Burgin City leaders are scheduled to hold their next meeting on the proposed annexation related to the project on July 20th. Following this, Mercer County Planning and Zoning will also conduct a public hearing.
